Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks and now I’ve found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold on the back wall and some of our shoes. The smell is really musty. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

For a small patch under 1 square foot, you might manage it yourself. The constant AC leakage, however, has likely created hidden moisture in the wall cavity, which is the primary concern in Dubai's humidity.

If you proceed, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. A supermarket bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can remove surface mold on non-porous materials like the wall, but it won't kill roots in porous drywall or prevent regrowth. Discard any moldy porous items like shoes. The critical step is to completely stop the AC leak and ensure the area is bone-dry within 24-48 hours to prevent immediate regrowth.

Given the description—ongoing leak, fuzzy growth, and a musty smell indicating active spores—this strongly suggests a larger hidden problem. Professional assessment is recommended. They will use moisture meters to find the full extent of water damage inside the wall, safely remove contaminated materials, and apply specialized antimicrobial treatments. For verification, a lab test can identify the mold species, which is important if occupants have allergies or respiratory issues. In many cases, the remediation company and the AC repair technician need to work together to solve the moisture source and the resulting biological growth.
