Can I clean my AC's clogged coils myself?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for about two years and just noticed that the AC upstairs is barely blowing any cold air, while the one in the living area is working fine. I took a look at the outdoor unit and the coils are completely clogged with a thick layer of dust and sand. With the summer heat kicking in, I’m starting to panic a bit. Is this something I can try to clean myself with a hose, or should I definitely call a professional company to handle it?

Attempting to clean severely clogged coils yourself with a hose is not recommended and risks damaging the unit. The fine desert sand and dust in Dubai form a concrete-like paste when mixed with condensation, and high-pressure water can bend the delicate aluminum fins, permanently reducing airflow and cooling efficiency.

In the UAE's climate, where AC systems run year-round, this maintenance is critical. A professional service for a villa unit typically involves using specialized coil cleaning solutions and low-pressure rinsing to dissolve the grime without harm. They will also complete a full system check to ensure the lack of cold air isn't also due to a refrigerant issue or electrical fault.

For a two-year-old system with a complete blockage, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The initial cost of a proper cleaning is almost always lower than the cost of repairs from DIY damage or the increased electricity bills from an overworked, inefficient system trying to cope with the summer heat.
