Mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind the wardrobe in my master bedroom of our Jumeirah Village Circle villa has large patches of black and green mold, which we only discovered when moving furniture. It's been getting worse since the heavy dew and humidity started a couple of months ago. I'm worried about the health risks for my family and the damage to the walls, but I have no idea what this kind of remediation should cost here. Is this a job I can tackle myself with bleach and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company?

That hidden mold growth is a serious concern, particularly in a bedroom. Given the description—large patches, multiple colors, and a clear link to recent humidity—this is almost certainly a job for a professional remediation company, not a DIY project.
The primary risk is that the visible mold is likely just the surface manifestation. The growth probably extends into the drywall and insulation behind it. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces; it only removes surface discoloration without addressing the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root structure) deep within the wall. Disturbing it with scrubbing will aerosolize a massive number of spores, significantly increasing your family's inhalation exposure and contaminating other parts of the room. In Dubai's climate, this is a systemic issue. The high ambient humidity, especially overnight during the dew period, creates constant condensation on cold exterior walls. This is a perfect breeding ground for mold when furniture is placed against it, restricting airflow. Simply cleaning the surface will guarantee a rapid return unless the underlying moisture source and condensation issue are professionally resolved. A proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing the contaminated porous materials (drywall, insulation), HEPA vacuuming, treating the cavity with antimicrobial solutions, and then rebuilding with moisture-resistant materials. Crucially, they will diagnose and rectify the cause, which often involves improving wall insulation or ventilation to prevent future condensation. For a case of this scale, you should request an inspection and a scope of work from a certified provider. The cost is driven by the extent of demolition and reconstruction required, not just the cleaning. It is a significant investment but is necessary to properly safeguard your property and your family's health from the respiratory irritants and potential allergens mold produces. |
