Is dirty AC vent causing my toddler's month-long cough?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has been coughing non-stop for the past month and our bedroom in Jumeirah Park just feels dusty all the time, no matter how much I wipe the surfaces. I just pulled the vent cover off and the inside is caked with thick, grey gunk. Given the high humidity and constant AC use, is this something I need to get cleaned professionally as an emergency this week, or is it okay to schedule it for later in the month?

That thick, grey gunk is almost certainly a significant source of the persistent dust and a likely contributor to your toddler's cough. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC operation, dust and moisture combine inside ducts to create an environment where allergens and microbial growth can thrive.

For a month-long respiratory issue in a young child, this warrants professional attention sooner rather than later. The visible buildup indicates the system is actively circulating irritants every time it runs. A proper duct cleaning involves specialized equipment to agitate and extract the debris from the entire system, not just the visible parts of the vent.

While not always a same-day emergency, scheduling it for this week is a prudent step for your child's comfort. Look for a provider that offers a visual inspection, perhaps with a camera, to show you the extent of the contamination inside the ducts themselves. The most credible services will also be able to discuss Dubai Municipality's guidelines for indoor air quality and system hygiene.

After the cleaning, focus on maintaining lower indoor humidity with your AC and consider using high-quality air filters rated MERV 8 or higher to capture finer particles, which can help reduce the rate of dust accumulation.
