Can I clean my dusty AC ducts myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been working overtime this summer and I’ve started sneezing every time it kicks on. I pulled off a vent cover and the amount of dust and sand caked inside the duct is pretty shocking. We’ve lived here for 5 years and I'm sure it's never been cleaned. Is this a job I can tackle myself with a shop vac and some brushes, or is this one for the professionals?

Attempting to clean your villa's AC ducts yourself with a shop vac is not recommended and unlikely to be effective. The complex network of ducts is inaccessible without specialized equipment; you'll only reach the first few inches, potentially dislodging deeper contaminants and worsening your air quality.

In Dubai's climate, the combination of fine sand and high humidity creates an environment where dust accumulation can often lead to microbial growth deep within the system, which is a common trigger for the symptoms you're experiencing. A professional duct cleaning service uses powerful truck-mounted HEPA-filtered vacuums, agitation tools, and compressed air whips to clean the entire length of the ductwork. They can also conduct a full system inspection to identify any underlying moisture issues or damage that could be contributing to the problem.

For a system that hasn't been serviced in five years, a professional assessment is the most reliable approach. Look for a provider that offers documented before-and-after evidence of cleaning, such as video inspection, to verify the results, not just a cleaned vent cover.
