Is black mould causing our cough and headaches??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the past two weeks, and I've started getting headaches myself. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah Park villa and found a significant patch of black mould hiding behind it, probably from the humidity. We had that big leak from the upstairs bathroom a few months ago and I guess it wasn't dried properly. Could this mould be the cause of our symptoms, and is a regular cleaning company enough to handle this or do I need to call a specialist?

Yes, the black mould behind your sofa is very likely causing the coughing and headaches you're experiencing. In Dubai's high humidity, mould growth is a common trigger for respiratory irritation, persistent coughs, and headaches, particularly in children and sensitive individuals. The leak from months ago provided the perfect damp environment for it to flourish unseen.

A regular cleaning company is not equipped to handle this. They will likely just wipe the visible surface, which can disturb the spores and make the air quality worse temporarily. The critical step they miss is identifying and rectifying the moisture source to prevent immediate regrowth.

You require a specialist who performs indoor environmental diagnostics. They will use moisture meters to confirm the wall is dry deep within and possibly use thermal imaging to check for residual dampness from the leak. The most important step is a lab analysis of the mould to identify the species. While all moulds cause irritation, knowing the exact type helps assess the potential risk level and confirms the remediation was successful.

For a case like this in a villa, expect a proper remediation process: sealing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores during cleaning, treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, and most crucially, providing a post-remediation verification test to confirm the air and surface samples are clear. This scientific, evidence-based approach is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved for good and your family's health is protected.
