Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots spreading behind the wardrobe. With the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse really fast. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional company to handle it?

Given the leak and rapid spread, this requires professional assessment and remediation. The black and green fuzzy growth indicates active colonization, and a leak from the AC unit itself means the contamination is likely inside the ductwork and drip pan, which you cannot access or properly treat yourself.

Using supermarket bleach is not recommended. It is mostly water, which feeds mould growth on porous surfaces like drywall, and its fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space. It also only bleaches the visible colour without addressing the root cause or the hidden microbial structure.

In Dubai's high humidity, with year-round AC use creating constant condensation, this problem will recur unless the leak is permanently fixed and the entire affected area is treated according to Dubai Municipality guidelines. A professional inspection will identify the mould species and the full extent of the damage, which often spreads behind walls.

For a case like this, the standard is to isolate the area, remove contaminated porous materials like the affected section of wall, and use HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments. Given that the source is your AC, the system itself will need to be inspected and decontaminated to prevent blowing spores throughout the room. You should request a company that provides before-and-after lab testing to verify the indoor air quality has been restored to a safe standard.
