Is black mold causing my kids' cough in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly and I noticed a patch of black mold growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and it's been fine, but the humidity the past few weeks seems to have made it worse. I'm really worried this is what's making them sick. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of mold here in Dubai, and should I be calling a professional cleaning company for something like this?

Black mold is a common trigger for respiratory issues like persistent coughing, especially in children. The high humidity we've experienced recently creates ideal conditions for mold growth, even in climate-controlled homes. While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any visible growth can release spores that irritate airways and worsen allergies.

For a patch behind a wardrobe, the first step is to identify and address the moisture source. In a Jumeirah villa, this is often condensation from an AC unit, a small plumbing leak in the wall, or moisture wicking from the slab foundation. Simply cleaning the mold without fixing this will guarantee its return.

Given your children's symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and can aerosolize spores, making the problem worse. A certified inspector can identify the exact species and moisture source. They use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobials to remove the growth safely and prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home.

The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor environmental quality, and reputable providers will follow these standards. Look for a company that offers a post-remediation verification test, like an air quality sample, to confirm the space is truly safe before the containment is removed. This is the most effective way to ensure the problem is resolved and your indoor air quality is restored.
