Weird sweet moldy smell in Marina apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My walk-in closet in our Marina apartment has started giving off a really weird, slightly sweet but also moldy smell over the last few days. I was getting my winter clothes out of the storage boxes on the top shelf and that’s when I first noticed it, and now I can even smell it faintly in the bedroom. I’m worried it might be a hidden leak or something growing in the walls because of the humidity. Has anyone else had this issue and figured out what the cause was?

That sweet, musty odor is a classic indicator of microbial growth, likely mould. The Marina's high humidity, combined with potential condensation from adjacent AC ducts or a small plumbing leak in the wall, creates the perfect damp environment for it to thrive.
Your first step is to inspect the closet thoroughly. Remove everything, including the storage boxes. Check walls and corners for any visible discoloration, water stains, or warping. Feel for dampness on walls and baseboards. The source could be a small leak from an adjacent bathroom or the AC condensate drain line running inside the wall. In many Dubai apartments, the final stretch of the AC drain line terminates near the outdoor unit, and a blockage can cause water to back up and leak internally, often behind walls. If no obvious source is found, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness within the wall cavity without destructive testing. For definitive identification, a surface or air sample sent for lab analysis can confirm the mould type. This is a common issue here, and addressing the moisture source is critical; simply cleaning the visible mould will not stop it from returning. |
