Can I remove bedroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m worried it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) caused by surface humidity, you can handle it yourself. However, the fact it's behind a wardrobe and you're seeing health symptoms suggests a deeper issue that DIY likely won't solve.

For a small area, use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner from a hardware store, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during cleaning. The key is to find and fix the moisture source—this is often a leaking pipe in the wall, condensation from an AC duct, or humidity from the room itself.

Given the Dubai climate with high humidity and year-round AC use, hidden condensation is a common culprit. If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty smell, or keeps returning after cleaning, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source with thermal imaging and moisture meters, which is critical for a permanent fix. Since your children are experiencing respiratory issues, identifying the mold species through lab testing can also clarify the health risk. For villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah, this professional diagnosis is often the most effective long-term solution.
