Why does my AC smell like sewage at night?« Back to Previous Page
|
The guest bedroom in my Jumeirah villa has started smelling strongly of sewage, but only in the evenings when we run the AC. It’s fine during the day, but as soon as we turn it on after sunset, this awful rotten egg smell fills the whole room. We’ve checked for leaks but can’t find any. Could this be a problem with the AC drain line or something else in the system?

That sewage smell in the evening points directly to a dry AC drain line trap. The U-bend in your AC’s condensate drain pipe is designed to hold water, which acts as a seal to block sewer gases from rising back into your home. During Dubai’s intensely hot and humid afternoons, the AC runs constantly, replenishing that water seal. When usage drops at night, the water in the trap can evaporate, breaking the seal and allowing the odour from the main sewer line to enter the system and be blown into the room.
First, check if the drain line is visibly clogged with the algae and sludge common here due to dust and constant condensation. A thorough flushing with a vinegar solution can clear minor blockages and deodorize the line. For a persistent problem, the issue may be a partially blocked or improperly vented main plumbing stack, which creates negative pressure that sucks the water out of the P-trap when other drains in the villa are used. This is a common issue in the region’s climate. A professional inspection is the most reliable step, as they can perform a smoke test to pinpoint the exact source of the sewer gas intrusion and ensure the drain line is properly graded and vented according to Dubai Municipality standards. |
