How can I permanently fix my shower drain's musty smell?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks, especially coming from the shower drain, and no matter how much I scrub the tiles, it comes back in a day or two. It’s gotten worse with the humidity lately. What’s the most effective way to deep clean the drain and stop this smell for good?

That persistent musty smell is almost certainly a biofilm—a living layer of bacteria and mould—growing inside your drain pipe. The high humidity here in Dubai provides the perfect damp environment for it to thrive, and simply scrubbing the visible tile surfaces won't reach the source.

Start by pouring a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar down the drain, followed by a flush of very hot water after 30 minutes. This can help break down some initial organic matter. For a more targeted approach, use an enzyme-based drain cleaner weekly; the enzymes consume the organic sludge that causes odours.

If the smell returns quickly, the issue is likely deeper in the P-trap or pipework. In many Dubai buildings, shower drains connect to a central wet waste system that can sometimes develop issues if not properly maintained. A professional inspection with a micro camera can identify if there’s a break in the seal, a clogged P-trap, or a more significant buildup that requires mechanical cleaning. For recurring problems linked to high humidity and AC condensation, this diagnostic step is often necessary to find a permanent solution.
