AC smell in Dubai: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing a faint, damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and it's definitely getting worse. It's strongest when the AC first kicks on after being off for a while. I've changed the filters myself but it didn't help at all. Is this something I can fix with a store-bought coil cleaner, or do I definitely need to call a professional HVAC company, and what should I expect to pay for a service call and clean here in Dubai?

That damp smell on startup is almost certainly microbial growth on your AC's evaporator coil or in the drip pan, a very common issue here due to our constant humidity and year-round AC operation. Changing the filter was a good first step, but it doesn't address the core problem, which is inside the unit.

A store-bought coil cleaner can be a temporary fix for very mild, surface-level issues, but it's often ineffective. These sprays cannot reach deep into the coil fins or properly clean the contaminated drain pan, which is a primary source of the odour. The risk with a DIY approach is that you may only mask the smell for a few days while the underlying mould or bacteria continues to grow.

Given the smell is persistent and worsening, a professional cleaning is the recommended course of action. In Dubai's climate, this level of contamination is a near-constant battle. A proper service involves dismantling the indoor unit to access, manually scrub, and apply a certified antimicrobial solution to the coil and drain pan, followed by a high-pressure flush of the condensate drain line to remove sludge.

For cost, expect a professional cleaning for a single split unit to be a standard service. The price is influenced by the unit's size and accessibility. The critical factor is to choose a provider that offers a documented clean-and-disinfect process, not just a superficial spray. Reputable companies should be able to explain their methodology and the products they use. If the odour returns quickly after a professional service, it could indicate a deeper issue like duct contamination, which would require a different assessment.
