Can I fix black bathroom grout myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my JBR bathroom has turned almost black, and no matter how much I scrub with regular cleaners, it won't come out. I think the humidity from our showers is causing mold, and I'm worried it might be making my allergies worse. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

The black discoloration in your JBR bathroom grout is almost certainly microbial growth, a common issue here due to our high ambient humidity and the moisture from daily showers. Regular surface cleaners often fail because the mold's root structure penetrates deep into the porous grout.
For a DIY attempt, use a hydrogen peroxide-based grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar; apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. For persistent cases, a diluted chlorine bleach solution can be effective, but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated and you are wearing gloves and a mask. These methods can lighten the stain but may not fully eradicate the root system. Given your allergy symptoms, the underlying concern is indoor air quality. If the growth is widespread or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely systemic, and a professional assessment is wise. They can determine if the growth is surface-level or has compromised the grout's integrity, requiring removal and re-grouting to fully resolve the moisture trap. In many Dubai apartments, improper bathroom ventilation exacerbates the problem, so running the exhaust fan for 30 minutes after showering is a critical preventative measure. |
