Dirty AC coil causing weak air and high bill?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom AC has been blowing weak, warm air all week and the electric bill just came in way higher than usual. I finally took a look at the unit in the ceiling and the coil is completely matted with a thick layer of dust. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and I'm kicking myself for not checking sooner. What’s the best way to clean it myself without causing damage, or should I just call a professional company in Al Quoz?

A clogged coil is almost certainly the cause of both weak airflow and the high electricity bill. The fan motor has to work much harder to push air through that matted dust, consuming significantly more power, while the insulating layer prevents the coil from absorbing heat effectively.

For a coil that is completely matted, a DIY cleaning attempt risks causing damage. Aggressive brushing can easily bend the delicate aluminium fins, permanently reducing efficiency. The wrong cleaning agent can corroate the coil or leave a residue that attracts more dust. The safest first step is to gently vacuum the surface with a soft brush attachment to remove loose debris.

In Dubai's climate, with its extreme dust and year-round AC operation, this level of buildup indicates the system has been struggling for some time. A professional deep clean is the most reliable solution. They use low-pressure chemical solutions and fin combs to restore the coil without damage, and a proper service should include checking the drain pan and line for blockages, which are a common secondary issue. For a system that hasn't been serviced in two years, a comprehensive inspection is advisable to ensure there are no other underlying problems.
