AC rattling noise on startup: what to check first?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has started making a rattling noise every time it kicks on, and it’s been waking me up at night for the past week. We live in an older building in Deira and the unit is definitely a few years old. I just want to get ahead of this before it breaks down completely in the middle of summer. What’s the most likely cause of this specific noise and which part should I ask the maintenance technician to check first?

A rattling noise at startup in an older Dubai AC unit is most often a loose or failing component being jolted by the initial compressor engagement. The primary suspect is the outdoor unit's fan motor or its blades, as years of thermal expansion and contraction, combined with our high ambient dust load, can loosen mounts and cause the fan to strike its housing. A worn compressor mount or internal compressor issue is a less common but more serious possibility.
Given the building's age in Deira, accumulated vibration over years of near-constant operation can shake screws loose on internal panels, fan guards, and even the copper refrigerant lines where they connect to the unit. The grit and fine sand pervasive in our atmosphere also act as an abrasive, accelerating wear on motor bearings; a failing bearing will produce a distinct metallic rattle before it seizes. Tell the technician to first power down the unit completely and inspect the fan assembly in the outdoor condenser. They should check for any debris obstruction, verify the fan blade is secure on the motor shaft, and ensure the motor mounts are tight. They should also visually inspect all accessible panels and the refrigerant line brackets for looseness. If those are intact, the investigation should move to the compressor mounts and the compressor itself. For a unit of this age, a full system inspection is prudent to assess other wear-related issues before the peak summer demand causes a complete failure. |
