How to eliminate musty closet smell in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet has started giving off a really strong, damp mildew smell, but only since the weather got super humid last week. I've checked all the corners for leaks or water stains and can't find any, and none of my clothes feel wet. Is this coming from the AC unit or the walls, and what's the best way to get rid of it for good?

That damp mildew smell is a classic sign of excess humidity condensing on a cold surface, a common issue in Dubai's climate. Since you've ruled out a leak, the most likely culprit is your AC system. The closet's cold wall or the AC duct serving that room could be running at a temperature below the dew point, causing moisture from the humid air to condense on it out of sight, creating a hidden breeding ground for mould.

First, check if the closet is on an exterior wall. These walls can become cold bridges. Ensure the AC thermostat isn't set excessively low, especially at night when humidity peaks. Running a small, standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom for a few days can help pull moisture from the air and the enclosed space. Inspect the AC vent in or near the bedroom; if it's noticeably damp or shows visible microbial growth, the issue may be within the ductwork.

For a lasting solution, the source of the moisture must be identified. A professional inspection is often needed to assess the AC's condensate drain pan and line for blockages or slow drainage, and to check ductwork for contamination or insulation issues. If the smell persists after addressing humidity and the AC, a microbial surface swab or air test from a certified lab can identify the specific species present, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation method.
