Can I clean apartment mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet in the living room, and now I've spotted a small black patch of mold, about the size of my hand, starting to grow behind the sofa. It's been there maybe a week or two. I'm worried it's going to spread and affect my kids' health. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

A small patch from a recent leak can often be handled yourself if you address the source and clean correctly. The immediate concern is stopping the AC leak; contact your building maintenance to fix it, as ongoing moisture will cause regrowth regardless of cleaning.
For the mold itself, bleach is not recommended. It can set stains and its fumes are problematic indoors. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. However, professional remediation is strongly advised in several Dubai-specific scenarios. If the mold covers more than one square meter, if it’s inside your AC unit or ducts, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues or allergies, a professional should assess it. The UAE's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to spread into wall cavities or under carpets from a small visible patch. A proper inspection with moisture meters can identify hidden saturation. For health verification, a post-remediation viability test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the spores are no longer active, which is crucial for peace of mind with children present. |
