AC dust causing sore throats and how to clean?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a lot of dust, and for the last week, both my husband and I have been waking up with really sore throats and stuffy noses. I wiped the vent and the cloth was completely black. Could this dusty air from the AC be causing these symptoms, and what's the best way to get the entire system properly cleaned?

Yes, the black dust from your AC vent is very likely causing your sore throats and congestion. That dust is a concentrated buildup of fine particulate matter, microbial debris, and potential allergens from the indoor and outdoor air that has cycled through your unit. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run constantly, this accumulation happens quickly and can significantly irritate respiratory systems.

The most effective approach is a professional duct and coil cleaning. For a proper clean, avoid companies that only offer a basic spray or wipe-down. The process should involve accessing the main air handling unit, mechanically agitating and vacuuming the evaporator coils, and using a high-powered vacuum system on all accessible ductwork to remove the settled dust. After a thorough cleaning, some providers can perform a particle count test to verify the reduction of airborne dust.

In many older Dubai buildings, poorly sealed or leaky ductwork can also draw in dust from ceiling voids or adjacent apartments, causing the problem to recur quickly. A proper inspection can identify if this is an issue. For persistent symptoms, consider an indoor air quality assessment that includes mould testing, as a dusty system often harbours moisture and biological growth.
