How to remove and prevent closet mold in humid apartment?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Marina apartment has developed a few small patches of black mold on the back wall, which we only noticed when pulling out winter clothes. We run the AC constantly but it's clearly not reaching properly into that enclosed space. What's the best way to not only clean this safely but also prevent it from coming back for good? Should I be using a dehumidifier in the room even with the AC on?

Closet mold in Marina apartments is common due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. The AC lowers air temperature but doesn't necessarily reduce humidity in sealed, stagnant spaces like a closet, allowing condensation to form on cooler walls.

For safe removal of small patches, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach, as it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots. Allow the area to dry completely. For porous surfaces like drywall, the wall material itself may be compromised and need replacement to fully resolve the issue.

Prevention is key. Leave the closet doors ajar for several hours daily to allow air circulation from the room. Avoid overpacking the closet, as tight clothing restricts airflow. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside the closet. A room dehumidifier can be beneficial even with AC running, as it actively removes moisture from the air, addressing the root cause the AC often misses.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify hidden condensation points and verify the wall is structurally dry. In many cases, the issue is a slight negative pressure or a lack of return air flow in the bedroom, which a specialist can diagnose.
