Found black mold in villa; DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a faint, damp smell coming from the corner of the living room. I moved the couch and found a small patch of what looks like black mold on the bottom of the wall. I’m worried it might be from a hidden leak. What’s the best way to tackle this myself, and when should I definitely call a professional cleaning company?

That damp smell and visible black mold on the wall strongly suggest a hidden moisture source, which is a common issue in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to address it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Thoroughly dry the area with a fan. The crucial step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. Check for leaking AC drain lines, condensation from AC vents dripping onto the wall, or cracks in the exterior rendering that might allow moisture ingress during our occasional heavy rains.

You should immediately call a professional if the mold covers a larger area (more than a square meter), if it returns quickly after cleaning, or if the damp smell persists. These indicate a significant, ongoing leak within the wall cavity that requires specialized equipment like thermal imaging cameras to locate. Professionals can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and the full extent of the contamination, which is vital for a complete and safe remediation, especially in a living area.
