How to remove damp smell from villa closet permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet in my Jumeirah villa has started giving off a really strong, damp smell, especially when I open it first thing in the morning. It's been getting worse since the humidity started rising last month, and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to treat this and keep the smell from coming back for good?

That damp smell is almost certainly mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai villa closets during humid months. The closet's lack of air circulation traps the humid air that seeps in, creating a perfect environment for mold on leather, fabrics, and even the walls.
First, empty the closet completely. Wipe down all surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner—avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Wash or dry-clean all affected clothing and fabrics. The key is to dry everything thoroughly before putting it back; use a fan or dehumidifier in the room for at least a day. To prevent it from returning, you must address the humidity source. Ensure the closet's exterior wall doesn't have a hidden leak from recent rains or AC condensation. Then, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar regularly, and consider installing louvered doors or a small, battery-operated moisture absorber (desiccant pot) inside. For a more permanent solution, having an HVAC technician assess if a duct can be extended to gently condition that space is highly effective. If the smell persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is warranted. The mold growth could be hidden within the wall or under the flooring, especially if this is an exterior wall facing the prevailing humidity. In such cases, surface cleaning is insufficient, and a lab test to identify the mold type is the only way to determine the correct remediation protocol. |
