Safe way to clean mouse droppings in pantry?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small, dark droppings in the back of our kitchen pantry in Jumeirah. I think we might have mice, which we've never dealt with before. What's the most effective and safe way to clean and disinfect the area and get rid of them for good?

First, do not sweep or vacuum the droppings, as this can aerosolize harmful pathogens. Ventilate the area by opening a window and run the AC to help filter the air. Wear disposable gloves and an N95 mask if available.
Spray the droppings and the immediate area with a disinfectant solution—a bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) is effective. Let it soak for at least 5 minutes to neutralize any viruses or bacteria. Use paper towels to wipe up the waste, place everything in a sealed plastic bag, and dispose of it immediately in an outdoor bin. Afterwards, thoroughly wash your hands. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and interconnected AC ductwork, a single mouse can indicate a wider issue. They seek cool, dark spaces like pantries and can enter through surprisingly small gaps. After cleaning, you must identify and seal their entry points. Common access routes are around plumbing penetrations under sinks or gaps under doors to balconies. For a lasting solution, a professional inspection is often necessary. They can identify all potential entry points, which are frequently hidden, and recommend exclusion methods that are more effective and safer than DIY approaches, especially in a villa or apartment complex where the problem might originate from a neighbouring unit. A reputable pest control provider will focus on exclusion and monitoring, not just baiting. |
