How urgently do I need AC coil cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

My AC unit has been making a gurgling noise for the last week and the air just doesn't feel as cold as it used to, especially in the afternoons. I live in a villa in Al Barsha and I’m worried it’s struggling with all this sand and heat. How urgently do I need to get the coils cleaned before it causes a bigger problem or breaks down completely?

Gurgling noises and reduced cooling, especially during peak afternoon heat, indicate your AC is struggling significantly. In Dubai's climate, with high dust loads and year-round operation, this situation warrants attention within the next week or two to prevent a complete system failure.

The gurgling sound often points to a refrigerant issue or a severely restricted drain line, both of which can be exacerbated by dirty coils. When evaporator coils are caked with the fine sand and dust common in Al Barsha, the system cannot absorb heat efficiently. It must work much harder, straining the compressor—the most critical and expensive component. This excessive strain is what ultimately leads to a breakdown, especially when outdoor temperatures exceed 40°C. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to diagnose whether the issue is solely dirty coils or a more complex mechanical fault.

While Dubai Municipality's regulations focus on general maintenance schedules for buildings, the immediate risk is to your unit's health and your comfort. Do not attempt to clean these coils yourself; the aluminium fins are easily damaged, and incorrect handling can cause refrigerant leaks. A proper cleaning involves specific biocides and degreasers to address microbial growth from our humidity and should be performed by a technician who can fully disassemble the unit to access the coil. The most reliable providers will document the cleaning process with before-and-after photos or even microbial swab results to show the measurable improvement in system hygiene and performance.
