How to fix foul sewage smell from kitchen sink?« Back to Previous Page

My kitchen sink has started giving off this really foul sewage smell, especially in the evenings. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and this just started happening last week after the last time we had the drains cleaned. I’ve tried pouring boiling water down it but the smell comes back after a few hours. What could be causing this and how do I fix it permanently?

A foul sewage smell returning after drain cleaning suggests a deeper blockage or a dry P-trap. The most common cause here is a partial clog further down the line that traps organic waste, which then decomposes and releases gases. Dubai's high humidity accelerates this bacterial growth.

First, check if the smell is isolated to this sink. If other drains are fine, the issue is local. The P-trap under your sink holds water to block sewer gases; if it's cracked, improperly installed, or has evaporated from disuse, it will allow odors back in. Pouring a liter of water down the drain can refill it if evaporation is the cause.

Since the smell began after a professional cleaning, it's possible the jetting process dislodged a blockage but pushed it further down, or even damaged a pipe connection, creating a new point for odor escape. Persistent odors, especially returning within hours, indicate a significant problem in the waste line that requires a professional inspection with a drain camera to locate the exact source of the blockage or breach. For villas, this is the most reliable way to achieve a permanent fix.
