Musty closet smell: dehumidifier fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
My master bedroom closet has started giving off a really strong, damp smell, especially in the evenings. I first noticed it about two weeks ago, and it’s gotten worse since last week’s humidity. I’ve pulled everything out and cleaned the floor, but the musty odor just comes back. Is this something I can fix with a dehumidifier and some bleach, or do I need to call a professional to check for a hidden leak or mold?

That damp, musty smell returning after a cleaning is a strong indicator of active microbial growth, likely mould, feeding on a moisture source. Given Dubai's high humidity, especially after recent weather, and the fact that the smell intensifies in the evenings (when AC might cycle less), a hidden moisture issue is probable.
A dehumidifier can help manage ambient humidity but won't resolve the root cause. Bleach is surface-level and ineffective on porous materials; it may temporarily mask the smell but won't kill the mould structure within walls or under flooring. The pattern you describe suggests the moisture is recurrent, likely from a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or even capillary rise from a saturated slab, which is common here. You need to locate and eliminate that moisture source. For a closet, this often requires a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meter to find the hidden leak or condensation point without unnecessary demolition. Once the source is fixed, then remediation of the affected materials can begin. Persistent dampness in our climate leads to rapid mould colonization, and the species should be identified to understand any potential health risks, particularly in a bedroom. |
