Foul sink smell after dishwasher: cleaner or plumber?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kitchen sink has started giving off this really foul sewage smell, especially in the evenings after we run the dishwasher. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’ve noticed it’s gotten worse over the last couple of weeks. I’ve tried pouring baking soda and vinegar down the drain but it only helps for a few hours. Is this something I can fix with a stronger cleaner from ACE, or do I need to call a building maintenance plumber to check the pipes?

This is likely a dry P-trap or a blocked main vent stack, both common in older Bur Dubai buildings. The evening timing suggests your building's drainage system is under peak load, forcing sewer gases back up through your sink's dry drain.
First, check if the sink's P-trap has water. Pour a liter of water down the drain to refill the trap's seal against gases. If the smell persists, the issue is likely deeper. Your dishwasher drain line might be improperly connected, allowing food waste to accumulate, or the building's main vent stack on the roof could be blocked by sediment or debris. Given Dubai's high humidity, organic matter in pipes decomposes rapidly, creating strong odors. A stronger chemical cleaner is a temporary fix and can damage older pipes. For a persistent sewage smell, a professional inspection is needed. They can use a camera to check for blockages in the main stack or improper connections in your dishwasher's drain line. Since you're in a building, inform maintenance first—the problem may be with a shared pipe, which is their responsibility to fix. If they are unresponsive, a licensed plumber can assess your unit's private drainage lines. For health and compliance, Dubai Municipality's health and safety regulations require landlords to address sewage-related issues promptly. |
