Can I remove black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it seems to be spreading. It's the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface, you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, black mold in a closet on an exterior wall in Dubai is a major red flag for a hidden moisture issue, likely from condensation due to the high humidity or a small leak.

Do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can feed the mold roots inside the wall. It also doesn't prevent regrowth. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar.

The critical step is finding and fixing the source of moisture. In our climate, this is often thermal bridging where the cold AC-chilled interior wall meets the hot, humid exterior, causing constant condensation inside the cavity. Scrubbing the surface without addressing this will result in immediate regrowth.

For any recurring mold, a spreading patch, or if the wall feels damp, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify the exact condensation point within the wall structure. Remediation then involves correcting the insulation issue or sealing the leak to make the environment permanently hostile to mold, which is the only lasting solution.
