Moldy AC smell causing scratchy throat and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint, moldy smell every time it kicks on, and it’s been getting stronger over the last month. My throat has been feeling scratchy and I’ve been waking up with headaches, which I never used to get. Could this smell from the air conditioning be the cause of these symptoms, and what should I do about it?

That moldy smell from your AC is very likely the cause of your scratchy throat and headaches. The musty odor is a classic sign of microbial growth, often mold or bacteria, inside the unit or ductwork. When the AC turns on, it aerosolizes these particles and spores, blowing them directly into your living space where you inhale them, leading to the respiratory irritation and symptoms you're describing.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. Our high humidity provides the constant moisture these organisms need to thrive, especially in the evaporator coils and drip pans of AC systems that run year-round. The dust prevalent here also contributes to the buildup that microbes grow on.

For immediate relief, you can change the AC's air filter with a high-quality allergen-rated one, but this often only addresses a small part of the problem. The core issue is inside the unit itself. A superficial cleaning won't resolve it; the internal components need a proper, targeted disinfection.

Given your physical symptoms and the persistent smell, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact source and type of contamination. Look for a provider that uses before-and-after surface or air testing to verify the results, not just a visual clean. This is the only way to know the biological load has been measurably reduced. In many cases, a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the entire system can resolve both the smell and the health symptoms.
