How to permanently remove mold from a humid bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started to feel really damp, and I just pulled out a few winter jackets to find small patches of mold on them. It's been like this for a couple of weeks, but I only realized the extent of it today. I think it might be from the humidity, but I run the AC constantly. What's the most effective way to kill the mold in the closet and stop it from coming back for good?

Mold in closets is a common issue in Dubai apartments, particularly during the more humid months. The problem often stems from a combination of high ambient humidity and a lack of adequate air circulation in enclosed spaces, even when the main room's AC is running.

First, address the immediate contamination. Remove all items from the closet. For washable fabrics like jackets, a hot water wash with a detergent containing a mold-fighting additive can be effective. For non-washable items, a thorough brushing outdoors followed by sunlight exposure can help. Wipe down all closet surfaces—shelves, walls, rods—with a diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold-cleaning solution. Never mix cleaning products. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during this process to avoid inhaling spores.

Stopping its return requires fixing the root cause: humidity and stagnant air. Simply running the AC in the bedroom may not be sufficient, as closets are often poorly ventilated. Leave closet doors open as much as possible to allow conditioned air to circulate. A small, standalone desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can make a significant difference by actively pulling moisture from the air. Ensure no plumbing lines are leaking in the wall shared with the closet.

If the mold growth is extensive, covers a large area, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be more serious. Persistent mold can indicate a hidden problem, such as a breach in the building envelope or an AC drain line issue causing elevated humidity. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to identify the hidden source of water intrusion. A lab test can also identify the mold species, which informs the correct remediation protocol.
