Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It wasn't there during the last summer, but with all the humidity lately, it's appeared and seems to be spreading a little. I'm worried it's from a small AC leak we haven't spotted.
Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've caught early, DIY cleaning can be effective if done correctly. The high humidity we've been experiencing in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold, especially in poorly ventilated spaces like closets.
First, identify and address the moisture source. You suspect an AC leak; this is very common here due to year-round usage and condensation issues. Check the AC drain line and unit for any blockages or leaks—resolving this is critical to prevent immediate regrowth. For cleaning, use a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a commercial mold remover. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe it clean and ensure the area is completely dried. Vinegar is less effective on porous surfaces like drywall. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has reappeared after previous cleaning, or if you or any family members experience respiratory issues like persistent coughing or headaches, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, which is important for assessing health risks. Remediation companies follow strict containment protocols to prevent spores from spreading to other areas of your home during cleaning, which is a significant risk with DIY methods on larger infestations. |
