How to maintain polished marble floors in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My villa’s marble floors in the living area were just professionally polished a few months ago, but I’m already seeing dull, whitish streaks and a loss of shine, especially in the high-traffic areas. I suspect it might be from the hard water we use for mopping or the specific cleaning products. What’s the best way to maintain polished marble here in Dubai to prevent this from happening again?

Hard water and abrasive dust are the primary culprits for dulling polished marble in Dubai. The high mineral content in our tap water leaves behind calcified streaks as it dries, while fine sand acts like sandpaper underfoot. Year-round AC use also creates a consistently dry environment that can cause some sealants to become brittle and less effective.
Use only distilled or demineralized water for mopping. Avoid acidic or vinegar-based cleaners entirely, as they etch the stone's surface. Instead, use a pH-neutral cleaner specifically formulated for marble. A microfibre mop is ideal as it captures dust without scratching. For high-traffic areas, dry dusting or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment daily is more effective than frequent wet mopping. The sealant is your floor's first line of defense. In Dubai's conditions, a high-quality impregnating sealer may need reapplication every 12-18 months, not the 2-3 years often cited elsewhere. You can test its effectiveness by placing a few drops of water on the floor; if it darkens the stone quickly and takes more than 5-10 minutes to absorb, the seal is still good. For the existing whitish streaks, a professional assessment is needed. The marks could be mineral deposits from hard water (which require a specific poultice to draw out) or, more seriously, etching from an improper cleaner that has physically damaged the polish. A reputable stone care specialist can diagnose the exact cause and recommend the correct restorative treatment, which is not a standard polishing job. |
