AC blowing sewage smell in apartment: urgent fix needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing a faint but persistent sewage smell for the past three days, especially when it first turns on. It’s strongest in the master bedroom and seems to be getting worse, making it hard to sleep. Is this something I need to call my landlord about urgently, or is there a simple fix I can try first?

This is a potentially serious issue that requires immediate attention. A sewage smell from your AC, particularly one that's worsening, strongly suggests a breach in your building's sewer vent or drain line system. The most common cause in Dubai's high-rise apartments is a dried-out P-trap in a floor drain or AC condensate drain line, allowing sewer gases to enter your unit.
First, locate all floor drains in bathrooms, the kitchen, and utility areas. Pour a liter of water down each one to refill the P-trap and block the gases. Check the AC's condensate drain pan and line for blockage or algae growth, which can produce a foul odor; a cup of distilled vinegar poured into the drain line can help. Ensure all sink and shower drains are also used regularly to keep traps full. If the smell persists after these steps, contact your landlord or building management immediately. Sewer gas contains methane and hydrogen sulfide, which are health risks in enclosed spaces. Dubai Municipality regulations hold property owners responsible for maintaining healthy indoor environments, and this qualifies as a habitability issue. They should dispatch a licensed technician to inspect the AC system and the building's plumbing vents for cracks or blockages. Do not delay, as the problem is unlikely to resolve itself and typically worsens. |
