Is AC vent smell making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's coming from the AC vents in their bedrooms. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this weird, almost chemical smell that seems strongest in the late afternoon when the AC is running constantly. It’s making all of us feel a bit nauseous and headachy. Could this be a refrigerant leak or something else, and who should I call to test the air quality in my Dubai Marina apartment?

A chemical smell from AC vents, especially with accompanying headaches and nausea, warrants immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, where AC systems run continuously, several issues could be at play. A refrigerant leak is a possibility, as it produces a distinct sweet, chemical odor and can cause the symptoms you describe. However, microbial growth (mold or bacteria) in the damp evaporator coils or ductwork is also common due to high humidity and can produce musty or sometimes chemical-like volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Given the symptoms and the fact it's strongest during peak cooling, you should first contact your building's facility management. Dubai regulations often place responsibility for central AC system maintenance, including refrigerant leaks, on the building operator. They can check the system's pressure and for leaks. For a comprehensive indoor air quality assessment, you would need a professional inspection. A certified technician can use tools like a refrigerant sniffer to detect leaks. To identify microbial contamination or VOC levels, a company with microbiological lab capabilities can take air and surface samples from the vents for analysis. This is the most definitive way to pinpoint the exact cause, whether it's a chemical leak or biological growth, and determine the necessary remediation steps. Do not delay, as prolonged exposure is affecting your family's health. |
