Should I fix my rattling AC and stuffy nose immediatly?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom AC has been making a weird rattling noise for the last couple of weeks, and I've started waking up with a stuffy nose and a bit of a cough. I live in a villa in Al Barsha, and we haven't had the ducts cleaned since we moved in three years ago. Is this something I need to get sorted immediately, or can it wait a few more months until the weather cools down a bit?

The rattling noise and your symptoms are connected and should be addressed now, not later. In Dubai's climate, a rattling AC unit often indicates a mechanical issue or a significant debris blockage, which can severely restrict airflow. This creates a stagnant, humid environment inside the ducts—an ideal breeding ground for mould and bacteria, which are then blown directly into your bedroom. Your stuffy nose and cough upon waking are a common reaction to these airborne contaminants.

Waiting months until the weather cools is not advisable. The system will continue to circulate irritants, potentially worsening your symptoms and allowing a minor issue to develop into a major mechanical failure. The high humidity and constant AC use here accelerate microbial growth and system wear.

You need two actions. First, have a certified HVAC technician inspect the unit for the mechanical rattle—this is a separate issue from duct cleanliness. Second, given your symptoms and the three-year timeframe, a professional duct inspection and likely cleaning are warranted. For a legitimate service, request a pre-cleaning video inspection to show the contamination and a post-cleaning verification to prove its removal. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines on indoor air quality, and reputable providers should be able to explain how their process aligns with best practices for our region. Resolving this will improve your sleep environment and system efficiency.
