Should I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot this week, and I just noticed a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just spotted it when moving furniture. What's the best way to safely clean this myself, or should I call a professional company right away?

The black mould behind your wardrobe is likely due to our high humidity and year-round AC use creating condensation on cooler walls. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning.

However, since this is in a bedroom and your children are coughing, the visible patch may be part of a larger issue. Mould often grows inside wall cavities or behind baseboards where condensation is constant, especially in villas. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source—this is the only way to prevent it from returning. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside walls.

In Dubai, many cleaning services offer mould remediation, but look for a company that provides a cause-and-effect report and post-remediation verification testing from an independent lab. This confirms the spores are gone and the moisture problem is solved, which is critical for health. DIY cleaning often just removes the visible stain while the root cause persists. Given the potential for hidden growth affecting your indoor air, a professional assessment is the most prudent course of action.
