Is it urgent to clean my AC coils now?« Back to Previous Page

My AC has been struggling to cool my villa in Al Barsha for the last couple of weeks and my DEWA bill just shot up by almost 300 AED. I can actually hear the unit straining when it turns on, and the airflow from the vents feels weak and not very cold. Given how brutal the summer heat is getting already, how urgent is it to get the coils cleaned? Could waiting another week cause serious damage to the unit?

Yes, it is urgent to address this now. The symptoms you describe – weak airflow, reduced cooling, a straining unit, and a sharp increase in your DEWA bill – are classic signs of severely fouled evaporator coils.

In Dubai's climate, AC units run constantly, pulling in fine sand and high humidity that create a dense, insulating layer of dust and microbial growth on the coils. This forces the compressor to work much harder to achieve the same cooling, directly spiking electricity consumption. That 300 AED increase is a clear financial signal of the strain. Waiting another week, especially as temperatures rise, risks overheating the compressor. Compressor failure is the most costly repair for an AC system, often requiring a full replacement.

The weak airflow you feel is also a health concern, as clogged coils become a reservoir for mould and bacteria that are then circulated throughout your villa. For a professional assessment and cleaning, look for a provider that uses a certified antimicrobial coil cleaner and can document the before-and-after results, such as a measurable drop in pressure across the coil. This verifies the cleaning restored efficiency rather than just being a superficial spray.
