Is AC vent cleaning worth it for dry cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having this persistent dry cough for the past few weeks, and I'm starting to think it's our AC vents. I noticed a fine layer of greyish dust settles on the TV stand just a day after I wipe it down, and our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle is only 5 years old. Is it possible the duct cleaning companies I see advertised are actually worth it, or is it just a scam?

Persistent dry coughs and rapid dust accumulation in a Dubai apartment are classic indicators of contaminated AC ductwork. The UAE's high ambient dust, combined with humidity and year-round AC use, creates an environment where dust, fungal spores, and other particulates readily accumulate inside ventilation systems. This debris is then circulated throughout your home, irritating airways.
While some duct cleaning services perform superficial work, a proper cleaning is not a scam when done correctly. The key is verifiable results. Reputable providers use containment systems to prevent cross-contamination, brush or agitation devices to dislodge debris, and powerful HEPA-filtered vacuours to extract it. They should provide before-and-after documentation, such as photos or video from an internal duct camera, to show the actual removal of settled dust and microbial growth. For a situation involving persistent health symptoms, a diagnostic approach is best. A professional inspection with a borescope camera can confirm if your ducts are the source. In many JVC buildings, improper sealing during construction allows dust from attics or between walls to be pulled into the supply system. A thorough cleaning can measurably reduce the particulate load in your air, but it must be paired with identifying and sealing such ingress points to be a long-term solution. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also test swab samples to identify specific irritants, which is particularly useful if mould is suspected. |
