Chemical AC Smell Causing Sickness, What Should I Do?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom in my Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment has been blowing this weird, chemical-like smell for the past two weeks, especially at night. My throat has been feeling scratchy and I’ve been waking up with headaches. I’ve changed the filters but it hasn’t helped at all. Could this smell from the AC unit be causing these symptoms, and what should I do about it?

Yes, a chemical smell from your AC can absolutely cause those symptoms. The scratchy throat and headaches are a common reaction to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other chemical irritants being circulated. Changing the filter was a good first step, but since it didn't help, the source is likely within the unit or ductwork itself.

In Dubai's climate, the two most probable culprits are a refrigerant leak or the off-gassing of accumulated chemicals on the evaporator coils. Refrigerant leaks produce a distinct, sweet-chemical odor and are a serious concern that requires immediate attention from a certified HVAC technician. The other common source is a layer of dust, moisture, and microbial growth on the coils that reacts with condensate, creating a musty-chemical smell; standard filter changes don't address this deep-seated buildup.

Given your symptoms are persisting, especially in a bedroom where you spend hours exposed, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Do not use the unit for cooling until it's assessed. A proper diagnosis involves a physical inspection of the indoor and outdoor units and often requires specialized equipment to check refrigerant pressure. For a persistent odor after a visual inspection, an indoor air quality test that includes VOC sampling can identify the specific chemicals present, which is the only way to confirm the source and plan an effective remediation.
