Best air purifier or cleaning routine for Dubai desert dust?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I'm starting to worry it's from the dust that settles on everything in our villa in Jumeirah. Even with the windows closed, a fine layer of it covers the furniture and floors just a day after our cleaner has been. Is there a specific type of air purifier or a particular cleaning routine that has worked for other families here to actually keep the fine desert dust out?

Desert dust in Dubai is exceptionally fine, often under 2.5 microns (PM2.5), which allows it to bypass standard AC filters and settle indoors. A multi-pronged approach is most effective for families in villas.
For air purifiers, prioritize two features: a True HEPA filter to capture the fine particulate matter and a high CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) for the room size. Place units in bedrooms and main living areas, running them continuously on low settings. Many households find units with a pre-filter layer especially useful, as it traps the bulk of the dust, extending the life of the more expensive HEPA filter. Your cleaning routine should support the purifiers. Use a microfiber damp mop on floors and a damp microfiber cloth on surfaces; dry dusting just redistributes the fine particles. Vacuum with a machine that has a HEPA-sealed system to prevent dust from being exhausted back into the air. Ensure your villa's AC filters are cleaned or replaced monthly, as a clogged filter cannot trap new dust effectively. If persistent coughing continues despite these measures, the dust may be transporting or masking other indoor allergens. It can be worthwhile to have a professional indoor air quality assessment to check for mould in the AC system or elevated allergen levels, which are common in Dubai's humid climate. |
