How to prevent closet moisture and mildew smell?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started to feel damp and my clothes have a faint mildew smell, especially after the humid nights we've been having. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this enclosed space. What's the best way to get rid of the smell for good and prevent this moisture buildup in the closet itself?

Closet moisture in Jumeirah Village Circle is a common issue driven by Dubai's high humidity, especially at night when outdoor dew points peak. Your AC cools the main room air, but that cold, dense air sinks and can become trapped in the enclosed closet space, leading to condensation on walls and your belongings. This creates the perfect damp environment for mildew.

Start by improving air circulation. Leave the closet doors open as much as possible and run a ceiling or standing fan to keep air moving across the entrance. For a more targeted solution, a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can actively pull moisture from the air; these are effective in cool, enclosed spaces where compressor-based units often struggle. Ensure your clothes are completely dry before storing them, as residual moisture contributes to the problem.

To address the existing smell, remove all items and wipe down the closet's interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar and water, which kills surface mould. Wash any affected fabrics. Avoid using cardboard boxes for storage, as they absorb moisture; opt for plastic bins with lids instead.

For persistent issues that return after cleaning, the moisture source may be more systemic. A professional inspection can identify if a negative pressure issue is drawing humid air into the apartment or if there's a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope that needs to be addressed to resolve the problem permanently.
