Is black mold on my AC vents causing coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot more than usual, and I just noticed a bunch of black specks collecting on our AC vents and the white walls around them in the living room. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for two years and just spotted this. Is this the dreaded black mold I keep hearing about, and who in Dubai can properly test and clean this safely?

It's likely related. The black specks are a common sign of microbial growth in AC systems, often a mix of mould and sooty dust. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for this in ductwork and drain pans. The coughs are a typical reaction to these particles being blown into the air, irritating respiratory tracts.

While it's often called "black mould," the specific type needs a lab culture to confirm. Stachybotrys chartarum, the most concerning type, is less common than Cladosporium or Aspergillus species, which still cause significant irritation. For children, whose airways are more sensitive, this exposure can definitely trigger persistent coughing.

You need a professional inspection and cleaning. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with store-bought sprays, as this can aerosolize spores and make the problem worse. Look for a company that specializes in indoor environmental quality and can provide before-and-after proof of cleaning, not just a visual wipe-down. The process should involve containment procedures, HEPA vacuuming of ducts, and treatment of the evaporator coil and drain pan.

For testing, any reputable provider should be able to take a surface or air sample and have it analysed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species present. This is the only way to know the actual risk level. After a proper cleaning, you should see a measurable reduction in those particles and, in many cases, an improvement in cough symptoms within a few days as the air quality improves.
