Can I clean my dusty AC coils myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been blowing weak, warm air for the last week, especially during the afternoon heat. I just pulled the filter and saw the coils behind it are completely matted with dust and fluff. I'm pretty handy, but I live in a Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and don't have a pressure washer or any special tools. Is this a job I can tackle myself with some basic cleaning spray and a brush, or should I just call a professional?

Cleaning heavily soiled coils yourself in a Dubai apartment is possible but carries significant risk of damaging the delicate aluminium fins. The extreme dust load here means coils matted with fluff are likely insulating the unit, forcing it to work harder and blow warmer air.
You can attempt a gentle clean using a soft-bristle brush and a coil cleaner spray from a hardware store. Avoid harsh chemicals and never use a pressure washer, as bent fins will drastically reduce airflow and efficiency. Rinse carefully with a low-pressure spray bottle, ensuring water does not enter the electrical components. For a unit already struggling in afternoon heat, a professional assessment is often wiser. They use commercial-grade, non-corrosive cleaners and fin combs to restore proper airflow without damage. In JVC's high humidity, a compromised AC can lead to moisture issues and mould growth inside the unit. If the system is under a building maintenance contract, check with your facility manager first, as self-cleaning may void service terms. |
