Urgent to treat mold in Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet has started giving off a really strong, damp mold smell over the last three days, especially in the evenings. It's gotten so bad that our clothes are starting to smell and it's giving me a headache. Given how humid it's been in Dubai, how urgently do I need to get this treated before it becomes a major health or structural issue?

Yes, this is urgent. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the rapid onset of symptoms like headaches indicates active microbial growth that needs immediate attention.

Inspect the closet immediately. Remove all items to air them out and assess the walls, ceiling, and floor for visible mould or water stains. Check for a leaking AC pipe in the adjacent wall or a condensate drain line blockage, both common here. The smell intensifying in the evening likely coincides with your AC cycling less frequently, allowing humidity to rise.

Given the symptoms and the speed of the issue, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and the extent of the growth. They can determine if it's surface-level or has penetrated the building materials. Dubai's climate means hidden mould can compromise structural integrity surprisingly quickly.

Until addressed, run a dehumidifier in the room and keep the closet door open to improve air circulation. Do not attempt to clean visible mould with bleach, as this can exacerbate spore release without addressing the root moisture problem. The priority is stopping the water intrusion; only then can the contamination be properly remediated.
