Can I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s about the size of a large dinner plate and the wall feels damp. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or should I just call a professional company for a proper assessment and removal?

For a patch that size with confirmed dampness, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible mold is often just the surface issue; the real concern is what's inside the wall cavity from that slow AC leak, which is common in Dubai's climate.

DIY bleach is not advised. It only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials and does not address the root moisture problem or the hidden fungal structure. It can also release a high number of spores into your air during scrubbing. For porous materials like drywall and plaster, effective DIY removal is nearly impossible.

In Dubai, the high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to regrow quickly if not remediated correctly. A proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the moisture source (like the AC drain line leak), containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials, and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers.

Given this is in a bedroom closet, where stored fabrics can act as reservoirs for spores, a professional inspection is prudent. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the full extent of the damage behind the wall and provide a protocol that ensures it is resolved completely. For a science-backed approach, the process should conclude with post-remediation verification, such as air or surface testing, to confirm the space has been returned to a normal fungal ecology.
