Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s been there a while and I think it might be from a small AC leak we had fixed a few months back. I’m worried about it spreading but don’t know if it’s a big deal. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

That black patch behind shoe boxes is a classic sign of past moisture, likely from that AC leak you fixed. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for this.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent-and-water solution, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't kill the mold roots in porous materials like drywall. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. However, since you mentioned it's been there a while and was caused by a leak, the bigger risk is hidden mold inside the wall or under the flooring. Mold is a symptom of a moisture problem; if the root cause isn't fully resolved, it will return. A professional inspection is recommended here. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to see if the wall is still damp internally from the old leak. They can also take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, as some types of black mold are more concerning than others. This is crucial for determining the right remediation approach, especially in a bedroom where you spend many hours. The goal isn't just to clean what you see, but to verify the underlying issue is solved to prevent it from spreading or recurring. |
