AC blowing chemical smell in bedroom: refrigerant leak?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has started blowing this weird, slightly sweet but chemical-like smell, but only in the master bedroom. It's been going on for about three days now and seems strongest right after the unit kicks on in the evening. I've already checked for any obvious spills or forgotten items, but I can't find the source. Could this be a refrigerant leak, or is there something else in the ductwork I should be checking first?

A sweet, chemical smell from an AC unit is a classic sign of a refrigerant leak, which requires immediate professional attention. Refrigerant is a controlled substance under UAE regulations, and only a certified technician with an F-Gas card is legally permitted to handle it. The leak itself poses a risk to the compressor and can lead to a complete system failure, while prolonged exposure to the vapour can cause dizziness and respiratory irritation.
However, in Dubai's climate, other culprits are common. Microbial growth like mould or bacteria in the evaporator coil or drain pan can produce a sweet, musty odour, often exacerbated by high humidity and constant AC operation. A foreign object, such as a plastic bag or a deceased pest that has been partially melted by the heat, can also emit a burning plastic or chemical smell when the unit heats up. Given that the smell is isolated to one bedroom, start by inspecting the vents in that room for any visible debris. Check if the condensate drain line from that indoor unit is clogged, as a backed-up pan of stagnant water is a frequent source of odour. For any chemical smell, the safest first step is to turn off that specific AC unit, ventilate the room, and contact a licensed HVAC technician for a diagnostic. They will perform a pressure test to confirm or rule out a refrigerant leak. If the issue is biological contamination in the ductwork or coil, a comprehensive cleaning and sanitization service, followed by verifying the results, is the solution. |
