AC blowing sewage smell in evenings: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing a faint but persistent sewage smell, but only in the evenings. It’s strongest in the living room and it’s been happening for about a week now. Is this something I can fix myself with a cleaning or is this a sign of a bigger issue that I need to call the building management for?

A sewage smell from your AC in the evenings is a strong indicator of a blocked or dry drain pipe, not a simple cleaning issue. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use produce significant condensate, and a blocked pipe allows stagnant water and sewage gases to back up into the unit, which the fan then circulates. The smell is strongest in the evenings as the system runs all day, allowing the problem to build.

You can perform a quick check: locate the AC's condensate drain line (usually a white PVC pipe exiting the external wall). If you see no water dripping from it while the AC is running, it's likely blocked. Pouring a mixture of warm water and distilled white vinegar down the drain line's access point can sometimes clear minor organic clogs. However, a persistent sewage odor suggests a more severe blockage or a break in the pipe trap that is allowing sewer gases to enter.

This is not typically a DIY fix. For apartment buildings, the responsibility for the structural integrity of drain lines often falls under building management, as per Dubai Municipality regulations. You should report this to them immediately. They are obligated to investigate, as a blocked drain can lead to water leakage and indoor air quality issues. A professional inspection is needed to clear the line, ensure the trap is properly sealed, and verify that no cross-contamination is occurring.
