AC blowing sewage smell in one bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing a faint sewage smell, but only in the master bedroom. It’s been happening for a couple of days now and gets worse whenever the AC kicks on. We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and just noticed this issue. Could this be a problem with the AC unit itself or a blocked drain pipe somewhere?

A sewage smell from one AC vent typically indicates a blocked condensate drain line. In Dubai's high humidity, AC units produce significant condensation that drains through a pipe. If that pipe clogs, stagnant water accumulates, allowing sewer gases from the drain system to be pulled into the AC unit and blown into your room.

Focus your inspection on the condensate drain line. The trap may have dried out, or the line itself could be blocked by microbial growth or debris. Since the smell is isolated to one room, the issue is likely localized to that specific AC fan coil unit's drainage system, not the building's main sewage line.

For a temporary check, locate the drain pipe's outlet (usually near your external wall) and ensure it's dripping water when the AC is running. If it's dry, that confirms a blockage. Do not attempt to pour chemicals down the line, as improper solutions can damage the system or create harmful fumes.

Given the persistent nature of the smell and the potential for microbial contamination, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use specialized equipment to clear the blockage, disinfect the drain pan and line, and verify the system is properly sealed against sewer gas intrusion. This resolves the root cause, not just the odor.
