AC chemical smell causing headaches and scratchy throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Quoz has been making this weird chemical smell for the past two weeks, especially when it first turns on in the evening. My youngest has started complaining of headaches and my husband says his throat feels scratchy after being inside all day. I’m really worried it’s something in the ducts that’s affecting our health. Has anyone else dealt with this and know a reliable company to test and clean the air conditioning system?

A chemical smell from AC vents, especially when paired with headaches and throat irritation, strongly indicates a refrigerant leak or the breakdown of internal components. In Dubai's climate, where AC systems run almost continuously, such mechanical issues are a common source of odors and require immediate professional attention from a licensed HVAC technician.

The symptoms you describe are consistent with low-level exposure to refrigerant gases or the byproducts of electrical overheating, like ozone. Do not run the system until it has been inspected, as this can worsen the problem. Open windows to ventilate the area if possible.

For a definitive diagnosis of any biological contaminants that may have accumulated due to a separate issue, a professional indoor environmental assessment that includes air and surface sampling can identify mould or bacteria. This is a separate process from the mechanical repair. In the UAE, look for providers who conduct accredited lab analysis and can provide a detailed report on their findings, not just a visual inspection.
